Sandblasting is a generic term for the process of smoothing, shaping, sizing and cleaning a hard surface by forcing solid particles on the surface at high speeds; the effect is same to that of using sandpaper, but offers a more even complete with no problems at corners. Sandblasting process can occur naturally, generally as a result of particles blown by wind causing eolian, erosion / artificially, using compressed air. An artificial sandblasting was patented by Benjamin Chew Tilghman on 18 October 1870.
The material used for artificial sandblasting was sand that had been sieved to a uniform size. The silica dust produced in the blasting process is caused silicosis after sustained inhalation of dust. Many countries & territories now regulate sandblasting such that it may only be processed in a controlled environment using ventilation, breathing air supply and protective clothing.

Some commercial field blasters are specially developed to handle multiple blast abrasives. These blasters are generally referred as multi media blasters.

These signs often add in gold leaf overlay and sometimes crushed glass backgrounds also called smalts. It can be used to refurbish buildings / create works of art.
