The main purpose of a strainer is to strain liquids away from the ingredients. Occasionally it is also used to sift fine ingredients away from larger ingredients. It may be formed as a spoon-shaped utensil or a basket-shaped strainer from various materials such as metal, nylon, or cloth.

The key difference between them is the size of the particles. Strainers generally remove larger particles visible in a liquid or gas, while filters remove contaminants invisible to the naked eye.

There are mainly five types of strainers that are used in kitchens worldwide. They are namely Food Mill, Colander, Tamis, Food Ricer, and Chinois or China Cap.

A strainer mainly helps in segregating solid particles from your liquid. Apart from straining liquids, they can also be used to infuse tea, steam vegetables, make the smoothest purees, poach eggs, sift flour and add decorations to your cookies.

The main difference is their application. A tea strainer is used after the infusion of tea leaves is done. On the other hand, a tea infuser is used during the infusion to give off more flavor to your tea.
