The UAE is ranked as the No. 1 place for food safety in the whole Arab region. The World Health Organization has reported that unsafe food is the cause for more than 200 diseases. Cholera, cancer and other such diseases are found to be caused due to consumption of unsafe food. In the event named Gulfood 2016 which was conducted until 25th February, food safety levels were ranked among 109 countries in the Economist’s annual Global Food Security Index 2015. This index report was calculated based on the parameters of availability and affordability of food as well as safety and quality standards.
In this study that was carried out in collaboration with DuPoint, a science firm, it was found that the UAE was ranked 23rd in the world and had a score of 75.6. It was due to its high standards of quality of food, food safety equipment & consultants, advanced technologies, logistical infrastructure of the country, healthy domestic market and large storage capacities. On the whole, the drastic progress in the global food security in the last years is the result of great food safety programs and government efforts. Due to these practices, the efficiency of food systems has drastically increased while the nutritional quality of food has also been improved.
Recently, food safety rating of the Emirates has touched the level of 98%. This rating is an instrument to measure food safety. It was announced by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) that food safety has increased by 24% in the past 3 years. It constitutes 87 components used for identifying the extent of improvement in the food safety system. Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority takes strict measures to handle food safety according to the international standards. They have implemented practices to raise the level of food safety among food handlers and ensure that the food establishments adhere by the law. Restaurants, cafes and other small business owners participate in Safe Food Initiative to raise the culture of safety of food.

Workers working in the food establishments are also trained about all the required safety procedures including proper hand washing, personal hygiene, proper food storage and effective cooking practices.
